Learning for Life

Racial Equity

At Belmont Infant and Junior Schools, we are proud to be an inclusive and welcoming learning community where every child and family feels valued. Our shared ambition is not simply to be “non-racist”. It is to be an actively anti-racist school community - one that listens, learns, reflects and acts with courage and compassion.

Across lessons, assemblies, and playtimes, children are supported to understand the harmful effects of racism, homophobia, and all forms of discrimination. They are encouraged to reflect on how their words and actions impact others and to develop into thoughtful, responsible, and compassionate individuals.

We are clear and consistent in our commitment to challenging discrimination in all its forms. We continue to build staff understanding of racial literacy, strengthen our inclusive practices, and ensure that our curriculum reflects and celebrates the diversity within our school community. Above all, we strive to create an environment where every child feels safe, understood, and able to flourish.

It is essential to address racism within primary education. Evidence shows that many children witness or experience racist language and behaviour, which can negatively affect their wellbeing, confidence, and progress. Racism is also recognised as a barrier to achievement. By openly discussing these issues and promoting respect, equality, and inclusion from an early age, we help to create a culture where all children feel valued and supported.

Racial Literacy

At Belmont Infant and Junior Schools, we are committed to developing racial literacy across our whole school community. This means building the knowledge, confidence, and understanding needed to talk about race and racism in a thoughtful and informed way.

Staff have had specific and specialised professional development to strengthen their understanding and ensure they feel confident discussing these topics with colleagues, children, and families.

Training focuses on areas such as:

  • Developing an understanding of anti-racist language
  • Exploring systemic racism and micro-aggressions
  • Challenging our own biases
  • Promoting equality and inclusion
  • Supporting children to talk about race and identity
  • Responding effectively to incidents of racism

This ongoing learning helps ensure that our staff are well-equipped to support all members of our school community.

An Inclusive Curriculum

In recent years, we have reviewed and developed our curriculum to better reflect the diversity of our school community. We aim for all children to see themselves represented in what they learn, including their backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.

Our curriculum is designed to celebrate diversity across ethnicity, culture, gender, and communities, while also broadening children’s understanding of the world.

We also create opportunities throughout the year to explore themes of equality and anti-racism through lessons, assemblies, and enrichment activities.

Information about what your child is learning is shared regularly with families, and further details about our curriculum can be found on the school website.

Parent Involvement

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting our commitment to inclusion and anti-racism. We value their contributions and work in partnership to ensure our school continues to grow and improve.

We provide opportunities for families to engage in discussions and access resources that support conversations about inclusion and respect at home.

We have also established a Racial Equity Parent Group (February 2026) to support our work on developing racial equity across the schools. The group has met a few times and are focusing on representation in Belmont Families, representation in the curriculum and our literature and in school wide events, trips and visitors to the school.

Dealing with Racist Incidents

At Belmont Infant and Junior Schools, we work proactively to prevent racism and the use of discriminatory language. However, as in wider society, there are occasions where racism occurs. When this happens, it is addressed promptly and appropriately.

We follow our clear Racist Incident Policy.

Racist Incident Policy

All staff are trained to implement this policy consistently and confidently. The policy is regularly reviewed to ensure it reflects best practice.

All incidents are recorded on our safeguarding system to enable us to monitor patterns and identify any repeated behaviours or concerns.

Each incident is carefully investigated by the Senior Leadership Team. Following this, appropriate support is provided to any child affected.
